Easy train to Machu Picchu

Needed to get to Machu Picchu, so I just went with PeruRail. Grabbed some Vistadome tickets online, pretty straightforward. The train itself was comfortable enough, had some snacks. It took about 1.5 hours to get there from Ollantaytambo. No issues, and the views were great. All in all, a solid way to travel.

Smooth booking, good trip

I purchased round-trip Vistadome tickets from Cusco to Machu Picchu. The website was easy to navigate for booking, and I received the e-tickets promptly. Boarding the train in Poroy (near Cusco) was well-organized, and my luggage was handled without a hitch. The train itself was clean, and the large windows offered amazing views. We got a small snack and drink, which was fine for the journey length. My only minor point was that the return train had a slight delay, maybe 20 minutes, but nothing major that impacted my schedule. Overall, a really good experience and I'd recommend them for getting to Machu Picchu.

July's super peak season, I'd say as soon as your travel dates are firm. Those Vistadome ones especially go fast.

For sure, I booked mine like 4 months out for a May trip and even then some times were already sold. Better safe than sorry, and you might catch an early bird deal.

What's the main difference between Expedition and Vistadome? Is Vistadome worth the extra cost for Machu Picchu?

Vistadome has those huge panoramic windows, even on the ceiling, so you get way better views. Plus they usually have some entertainment onboard and fancier snacks. Expedition is more basic, still good, but less frills.

I took Vistadome and loved the views, especially on the way up. The extra cost is for the bigger windows and a slightly more 'touristy' experience, like a fashion show sometimes. Expedition is just a normal train with good service.

Thinking of taking the Titicaca train. Is it really worth the money compared to just flying or taking a bus between Cusco and Puno?

Totally worth it! It's an experience in itself, not just transport. The scenery and the service are incredible. It's slow, but that's the point.

I guess it depends on your budget and how much you like trains. If you're looking for quick, probably not. But for the views and the luxury of it, it's a solid choice. Had a friend who loved it.
